This year's motto "Back to the Future - The Journey Continues" fit perfectly to THE NEXT 100 YEARS, the 100th anniversary celebration by BMW Motorrad. In the spirit of this guiding principle, fans we able to see different concept vehicles that were rebuilt in honour of memorable classics down to the finest detail up close. BMW presented in the automotive section the M1 Coupé Hommage from 2008, the 328 Hommage from 2011 and the all-new 2002 Hommage. For the very first time, the BMW Group presented a tribute bike at the Concorso d' Eleganza Villa d'Este - it was the star of the evening.

In honour of the birthday child.

As the curtain fell on Friday at 8:00 pm and the R 5 Hommage was presented, many of those present suddenly felt as if they had time travelled to another era. The R 5 will be celebrating its 80th birthday this year. This was the impetus for BMW Motorrad to present and to pay tribute to its incredibly successful classic.
Everything went according to plan. The R 5 Hommage garnered huge applause at its world premiere and was even a real eye catcher and the hottest topic of conversation after the show. In addition to the tribute bike, which was developed by an experienced team of expert designers, customisers and engineers, its original counterpart was always present: the R 5, which incidentally had its world premiere in London in 1936.

Would anyone like an audio sample?

Of course, there was also an audio sample for visitors to hear: At the traditional motorcycle street run, BMW Motorrad head Stephan Schaller drove the R 5 Hommage through the streets of Cernobbio. The sound was impressive.
That's because the R 5 Hommage actually runs with an original the R 5 engine, which already has a long racing career. Only a few engine parts which were destroyed needed to be reproduced. And so another era lives on in this bike.

On Sunday morning, things got serious for the motorcycles after the exhibition days: The winner of the beauty parade would receive the award. The winner of the Coppa d'Oro, which is awarded by the jury for "Best of Show Bikes", was the Grindlay Peerless 100 from Erez Yardeni from Thailand.

The BMW Group's cars were also there to be seen. One of the eye-catchers was the BMW Concept Coupé Mille Miglia from 2006, with which the engineers wrote a worthy epitaph for the legendary retro racing car BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé from 1940.

Concept is king.

Even though the R 5 Hommage was the first tribute bike that BMW Motorrad presented at the beauty contest in Cernobbio - the brand already had experience with the notion of magnificent beauty for a very long time. As in previous years, there were concept bikes that made the hearts of classic motorcycle fans beat faster. In 2013 BMW Motorrad impressed with Concept Ninety, reminiscent of the R 90 S.
In 2014 the Concept Roadster blew the entire notion of naked bikes out of the water. A year later Concept 101 was introduced, based on the six-cylinder K 1600. 90 years of BMW Motorrad - bringing many classics together. Enough to pack future surprises at the Concorso d' Eleganza Villa d'Este with sensational concept and tribute bikes.
