As soon as the vest is connected with the jacket and switched on, just zip it shut: the system will activate and the journey can begin. The close-fitting sensors integrated in the vest allow the system to recognise a crash within 30 to 60 ms. Arranged in the back and shoulder region of the vest, they continuously transmit measurements to the central control module. The air chambers fill within 25 ms with the help of a state-of-the-art compressed air reservoir. Maximum protection – faster than the blink of an eye, as it were.

For Sven Kirschning, the BMW Motorrad product developer of the Street AIR system, it was only a question of time until there was also a system for use on the road and not just on the racetrack. "With BMW Motorrad Street AIR we now have a solution that combines maximum protection with maximum flexibility," said the product developer in an interview. Sven Kirschning is fascinated with the additional protection for the chest and shoulders – all without restricting the wearer's freedom of movement. There was also no danger of the system spontaneously activating during test rides.
"You have to consider that the system works so quickly that although the rider may perceive the release, this is not alarming. The human reaction time is so slow that you carry on riding normally." For the future, expanding the product portfolio in this area is definitely conceivable.
