Telelever.
The system that caters for sporting ambition.
The patented Telelever front suspension saw BMW Motorrad breaking new ground in suspension engineering. The system separates the two functions of wheel alignment and damping/suspension simply and effectively, thereby improving riding comfort.
Like with the telescopic fork, the wheel is still aligned by the actual fork, which consists of two struts with slider and fixed fork tubes. It is a design with the greatest possible coverage, thereby ensuring a high level of stability. A semi-trailing arm joined to the frame at the front supports the fork and front wheel. Suspension and damping tasks are performed by a central spring strut. Unlike a conventional telescopic fork, the fork on the Telelever system only needs to be able to absorb low bending moments during braking and when driving over uneven surfaces meaning the slider and fixed fork tubes cannot jam each other.
Further benefits of this design, which has smaller Telelever slider pipe diameters compared to conventional telescopic forks, are the weight advantage and extremely sensitive response characteristics. In addition the low unsprung masses and the speed at which the suspension responds ensure outstanding grip on uneven roadways.
The Telelever system offers the option of designing the geometry so that the fork legs and hence the front end are only slightly submerged when braking sharply. As a result the rider is provided with a better response. A further benefit of the Telelever system is that it was possible design electronic control of the anti-blocking system (ABS) so it is more sensitive. For, despite pulsating braking forces, no bending vibrations occur. Overall the Telelever system contributes to greater riding comfort, catering for riders' sporting ambitions while at the same time increasing safety in critical road situations.
