BMW Motorrad Days, the motorcycle event of the year, has been taking place here for the past 15 years.</p> <p>Garmisch Partenkirchen sits like a story-book town at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. Countless trails take hikers up to nearby peaks and beyond to ice-cold Alpine lakes. Once a year, this idyllic setting is a magnet for thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts. A festival atmosphere takes over in Garmisch-Partenkirchen during the event. The locals celebrate together with bikers, who come to BMW Motorrad Days from literally every corner of the earth.</p>

<p>The road stops at the Darién Gap. To continue his journey from Alaska to Argentina, Dylan Wickrama builds a raft, powered by his BMW R 1150 GS, and starts his adventure in the Pacific. The Sri Lankan's story spellbinds very many people. Now a documentary film is going to be produced - using crowdfunding.</p> <p>Life sometimes invents stories that are more incredible than any Hollywood film maker could ever think up. One such life story is that of Dylan Wickrama. It is about a boy who often looked out to sea from his native Sri Lanka and passionately longed to know what lies beyond the horizon. It was unlikely that he would ever find out. Because Dylan grew up in poor circumstances. His father was killed by a burglar when Dylan was not even six years old. He had to grow up, and bear responsibility, much too fast. Years later he received the opportunity to discover the world he hitherto only knew from the journals that were passed around the village. On his BMW R1150 GS "Bruce" he travelled more than 210,000 km on four continents over a period of three years. But the real adventure begins at the Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia.</p>

He goes on patrol with his motorcycle – always on the lookout for the right subject. In this interview, he tells us what he loves about motorcycling and what adventure means to him. </p>

<p>Manoeuvring motorcycles over dilapidated bridges, crossing rivers with the GS and changing tyres in a hurry: the International GS Trophy is an enduro challenge like no other.</p> <p>In 2016 it was time for the event once again. 19 teams from all over the world rode their BMW R 1200 GS motorcycles across northern Thailand. The GS riders conquered 1,400 kilometres, 19 special tests and seven daily stages. They crossed jungles, dams and rain forests, enduring brutal heat and high humidity. The sixth International GS Trophy left them physically exhausted but satisfied in every other respect. </p>

<p>Allow us to introduce: Inga Birna Erlingsdóttir, currently the only female motorcycle police officer in Iceland. Motorcycles are Inga's great passion. For her job she rides all day, every day. In her spare time, she exchanges her police motorcycle for a BMW GS. </p>

<p>As the first female marshal at the International GS Trophy, Jolandie, or simply "Jo" Rust has to assert herself in a typically male domain. It's not difficult for her. Rust doesn't get fazed that easily. Not even after being held up at gunpoint during her trip across Africa on an Enduro.</p> <p>The guys wipe the sweat from their brows. Temperatures are soaring past the 30-degree mark. But it's not the heat that's tough for these men, it's the incredible humidity in Mae Sariang, a town in the heart of Thailand's back country. At a loss for what to do, they stand around a team mate's motorcycle before making one last attempt to pull the 250 kilo R 1200 GS out of the mud. Forget it. They need Jo. Jo is the team leader, the boss, the pro. Jo has pulled her team mates out of the mud many times during the seven-day International GS Trophy Enduro adventure. And out of other messes.</p>

<p>He's travelled the Sahara, the Atacama and even Antarctica. Photographer and geographer Michael Martin is in his element in places where you almost never see another human face.</p> <p>Michael Martin travelled to the desert for the first time at the age of 17. He rode his moped to Morocco, looked out over the vast expanse of the desert, and was captivated for life. Since then, he has spent most of his time on brilliant beige sand beneath the deep blue sky. He lives rough here, holding out for the right moment to press the shutter.</p>

<p>Models and extreme sport are not mutually exclusive. And living proof of this is Patricia Gebauer. Born in Munich, she loves motorcycling with a passion and keeps herself in shape with the Thai martial art Muay Thai. Risking broken bones and bruises in the toughest martial art in the world in no way impinges on her passion.</p>

<p>The BMW Motorrad Days drew motorcycling fans from all over the world to meet up in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Two of them even travelled all the way from British Columbia in Canada. As winners of the social media campaign #Rideandshare, they received a priceless experience.</p> <p>Naomi Tweddle and Alberto Lara Mendieta are more commonly known in the social media world as MotoLara. The pair's motorcycling adventures have gone down a storm in their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter communities as well as on their website. This is how BMW Motorrad became aware of MotoLara while on the lookout for a social media superfan, and invited them and other passionate bikers to post their experiences in a challenge under the tag #Rideandshare. In the end, the winner would be the one able to excite and motivate their community to interact and the one who got the most likes and shares.</p>

<p>For Dr. Hans-Henning &quot;Baba&quot; Bützow, every kilometre counts. During his motorcycle travels, the physician has frequently encountered people who are living in poverty, yet willing to share everything with him. Touched by the hospitality and welcoming smiles of these people, Baba set a goal for himself: On the Ride of Smiles Tour, he will ride 80,000 kilometres on an R 1200 GS Adventure and raise 50,000 euros for charity. At the end of the tour, the children in need will have a reason to smile again. </p>

<p>The road is not enough. Like almost everywhere in Scandinavia, the time of year during which you can ride on the roads in Sweden is very short. On the rugged terrain of the north, snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures set the tone more than half of the year. However, the lakes that become frozen over open up many new opportunities for riders, such as Robert, who's 25. Lakes are nothing other than water - hardened water. All that's needed is a little creativity in the workshop, tyres with spikes, a playful attitude and lots of courage... </p>

<p>Medieval battles aren't just for video gamers. Motorcycle enthusiast Robert Nacke regularly puts on his knight's armour and travels back in time to the 15th century for medieval combat. He competes against other daring warriors in medieval combat, a full- contact sport in which opponents wear armour and use authentic weapons.</p>

<p>As Isaac Newton, the discoverer of gravity, once observed: "What goes up must come down". But what goes up doesn't always have to come down in the same way. The British adventurer Squash Falconer rode a motorcycle to Mont Blanc, climbed to the top and paraglided from the summit. It's as if she was trying to show the world that no mountain is steep enough to keep her from her dreams.</p> <p>She had long been attracted to the mountain, the snow king, sitting on its majestic throne in the French Alps. During a ski trip to Les Arces at the age of 18, the petite British woman Squash Falconer, was absolutely fascinated by Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. "I can still remember being so impressed by the mountain, even from far way", says the 35-year-old, her eyes lighting up. "I remember thinking it would be cool to climb it one day". Years later she completed the expedition that would involve more extreme endurance than merely climbing to the 4,810-metre summit.</p>

How Tomm Wolf became "Mr GS Trophy".
<p>Tomm Wolf didn't have to be elected "Mr GS Trophy" . Instead, the sports manager of the International GS Trophy earned his nickname thanks to his GS expertise and his infectious enthusiasm for adventure riding. After the fifth challenge in Southeast Asia, he recalls his many years of experience with this iconic motorcycle.</p> <p>When the legendary BMW GS was introduced in 1980, Tomm Wolf had already been into adventure riding for years. His companion: a customised BMW. "In 1978 I bought my first BMW motorcycle and modified it so that it could handle my trips", says Tomm. His bike needed to run well on rough terrain in places like Africa. So he installed a larger tank and longer front forks. "But when BMW rolled out the first R 80 G/S in 1980, it was precisely the motorcycle I had been waiting for".</p>

<p>Pasta, pizza, Parmesan – and that's not even the half of it. Especially for 290 enthusiastic enduro adventurists. They're taking part in the Transitalia Marathon, which was launched in 2015 by former racer Mirco Urbinati. The Transitalia Marathon is not a competition. Rather, it's a big, communal adventure – the ideal event for heavyweight enduros. In other words, the perfect terrain for the GS community to pursue that spirit of discovery once again – set to the tune of enthusiastic Italians cheering along the road side: che bella moto! </p>

<p>Driving experiences, driving shows, live performances: For three days, Munich's Olympic Park was a celebration of the BMW Group. The BMW Festival from 9 to 11 September opened up new realms of experience that transported visitors to the mobility world of the future. </p> <p>The festival pavilion between the Olympiahalle and the Olympic Stadium was a Mecca for motorcycle lovers. That's because BMW Motorrad was showcasing the brand's latest bikes on Coubertinplatz. Just a few steps from the main stage, BMW Yachtsport, BMW Golfsport and BMW Lifestyle's open-air showroom were bursting with luminous dreamscapes at the edge of the Olympic Lake. The BMW 7 Series and its innovations were presented in exclusive shows on the lake stage, while the peninsula of the Olympic lake became a fun zone for outdoor lovers and families with children. Vintage BMW fans encountered automotive gems from the past while they strolled through the park.</p>

A tribute to a golden era of motorcycling.
<p>In 2013, BMW Motorrad celebrated the 40th birthday of a real icon: the BMW R 90 S. With a top speed of almost 200 km/h, it was one of the fastest motorcycles of its time. This was facilitated by what was at the time a revolutionary innovation; never before had a designer contributed to the development of a motorcycle. Yet it was precisely this that let to the pioneering front trim panel on the BMW R 90 S. Which was also available as standard for the first time. Soon, other manufacturers would follow suit and develop an aerodynamically optimised front and rear trim.</p>

That's because BMW Motorrad was showcasing the brand's latest bikes on Coubertinplatz. Just a few steps from the main stage, BMW Yachtsport, BMW Golfsport and BMW Lifestyle's open-air showroom were bursting with luminous dreamscapes at the edge of the Olympic Lake. The BMW 7 Series and its innovations were presented in exclusive shows on the lake stage, while the peninsula of the Olympic lake became a fun zone for outdoor lovers and families with children. Vintage BMW fans encountered automotive gems from the past while they strolled through the park.</p>

The Concept Ninety.
A tribute to a golden era of motorcycling.
<p>In 2013, BMW Motorrad celebrated the 40th birthday of a real icon: the BMW R 90 S. With a top speed of almost 200 km/h, it was one of the fastest motorcycles of its time. This was facilitated by what was at the time a revolutionary innovation; never before had a designer contributed to the development of a motorcycle. Yet it was precisely this that let to the pioneering front trim panel on the BMW R 90 S. Which was also available as standard for the first time. Soon, other manufacturers would follow suit and develop an aerodynamically optimised front and rear trim.</p>

<p>This is the story of four "MotorCircus" lads from Berlin. On BMW oldtimer motorcycles and armed with a camera, they set out on a 4,000 km long journey. From Berlin, they rode through Belgium, France and London to the Isle of Man. </p> <p>The film of this journey – Mission Manx – premiered on 8 March 2014. A little while later, BMW fans around the world were able to view the result of this journey. <p>The rumbling of powerful engines signalled a highlight of the London Fashion Week: the opening of the Belstaff shop. Headlights flared up in the evening twilight. Several bikers wearing leather and waxed jackets ride in front of the trendy shop. Exactly what the photographers had been waiting for. In the thick of it: fashion icon David Beckham. He almost brought the hustle and bustle of London's trendy Bond Street to a standstill. His companions arrived in front of the shop on fashionable Café Racers and Custom Bikes. Many of them brought along their own BMW custom bikes. Among them were Fred Jourden and Hugo Jezegabel from Blitz Motorcycles in Paris. And the BMW boxer fan trio of Berliners Christoph Köhler, Marko Kramer and Martin 'Lemmi’ Lemcke – better known as MotorCircus – were not to be missed either.</p>

<p>Scramblers do not know any standards or conventions. Like their owners. The Concept Path22 is the first scrambler project from BMW Motorrad. The basis: an R nineT. </p> <p>The goal: an intensive collaboration with some of the most creative and above all individual protagonists of the customizer scene. </p> <p>The result: a bike which leaves no desires unfulfilled –&nbsp;but instead makes all of them possible. This is what pure freedom should look like. </p>

L'Echappée Belle ("The Great Escape") sidecar design wins Custom Contest.
<p> BMW Motorrad was invited to a custom contest in Paris. French customisers were requested to submit drafts for an R nineT conversion. The artists were given total creative freedom. The jury, consisting of Fred "Krugger" Bertrand, two-time custom champion, and Ola Stenegärd, motorcycle designer, evaluated the large number of proposals. The winner, the French customiser Old School Engineering (OSE) won over the jury with their unique sidecar design. The prize: a brand-new R nineT, plus 10,000 euros. The winners can use the prize to implement the design they submitted. The result: "L'Echappée Belle" - "The Great Escape". OSE presented their sidecar at the Custom Contest in Paris. The team showed that sidecars are by no means out. </p>

<p>The R nineT is the perfect starting point for a custom build. With just a few steps, it can be converted from a two-seater to a single-seater, and thanks to separate vehicle and engine electronics, it offers almost endless possibilities for gearheads.</p> <p>Several of the most renowned customizers have been running riot on the R nineT. With unmistakeable handwriting, they show what can be done with expertise, creativity and the modern classic boxer.</p>

<p>PURE riders are individualists. Bikes express their individuality. They're sophisticated and expressive, just like the bikes they ride. Not many people are brave enough to build a custom motorcycle, but those who do it are driven by PURE passion and turn their customers' dreams into true icons.</p> <p>More and more renowned custom shops are converting old twin-valve BMWs into unique works of art. These are just a few, we'll keep adding more. In the future, the nineT may form a new basis for customising.</p>
The dragstrip – a platform for fame.

<p>Customisers have been preparing for this day for months, tinkering in their workshops at night to be ready on time for Glemseck 101. They'll present the finest custom bikes at the Essenza Sprint. The two-wheeled works of art combine performance and design and encapsulate the very essence of a motorcycle. The rules are quite simple: two wheels, two cylinders, a maximum of 1200 cc. But the implementation is an art in itself.</p> <p>A murmur goes through the crowd when the 16 custom bikes for the Essenza Sprint are presented to the audience at Glemseck 101. The multitude of visual treats could fill whole picture books. Skilled hands have freed roadsters, cruisers and naked bikes of their standard trim and transformed them into visionary one-offs. Because the creators of the sprint call for motorcycle manufacturers and importers to create the essence of a motorcycle – and to present it not just once at the sprint at Glemseck 101, but also a second time at the Intermot in Cologne.</p>

<p>Hayden Roberts lives in Long Beach, California. Here, he co-founded the renowned customizing workshop Hell On Wheels MC. This is also where the name for his vintage motorcycle race came from – all over the world. Because when Hayden is not tinkering with bikes, he is organising races. And because these are always just one big party, he is also known as "Chief Party Planner". A born entertainer and absolutely obsessed with motorcycles – a magnificent mix. </p>

What else would a Japanese person ride in Munich but a BMW chopper?
<p>When Yasunobu came to Munich five years ago, it was clear to him that he wanted to ride a chopper in his new home too. And seeing as his balcony even looked out onto the four-cylinder BMW building, he could hardly come closer to a BMW Chopper.</p> <p>Raised in Yokohama, Yasu-San came into contact with motorcycles even as a small boy. There was a bloke in his neighbourhood who would love to ride a strange motorcycle late at night on the streets of Yokohama and Tokyo in order to stir up a commotion. He is of course a member of a notorious Bozozoku gang, who would make the roads unsafe and loudly provoke people, usually in large groups and always without exhaust pipes. So it's no wonder that Yasunobu, faced with these experiences, doesn't really want to fit into the regulated Japanese social patterns, and would rather explore the world on his motorcycle.</p>

<p>Imagine you and your friends are heading out on a motorcycle trip from Europe to West Africa. And imagine you're not only fulfilling your own dream, you're also making one come true for disadvantaged children in Africa.</p> <p>That's exactly what a club called MotorCircus from Berlin plans to do. These guys are already well known in the BMW Motorrad community for their MissionManx road trip film. The film documented their trip to the Isle of Man for the most legendary motorcycle racing festival on the planet: the Classic TT. MotorCircus combines the love of customising, building and riding old BMW boxers with another passion altogether: While racking up miles, they raise money for a medical aid project in Serrekunda that they've been committed to since 2008.</p>

<p>The original wall of death is a breathtaking motorcycle show full of tradition and style.</p> <p>Three R 25s were there for the start of the Pure&amp;Crafted Festival 2016. Donald, Clemens and Peter Petersen did their routine on this bike simultaneously. Kara Satana, the only steep face driver in Germany, also showed the crowd some daring motorcycle manoeuvres on the oldest steep face in the world.</p>

<p>Driving experiences, driving shows, live performances: For three days, Munich's Olympic Park was a celebration of the BMW Group. The BMW Festival from 9 to 11 September opened up new realms of experience that transported visitors to the mobility world of the future. </p> <p>The festival pavilion between the Olympiahalle and the Olympic Stadium was a Mecca for motorcycle lovers. That's because BMW Motorrad was showcasing the brand's latest bikes on Coubertinplatz. Just a few steps from the main stage, BMW Yachtsport, BMW Golfsport and BMW Lifestyle's open-air showroom were bursting with luminous dreamscapes at the edge of the Olympic Lake. The BMW 7 Series and its innovations were presented in exclusive shows on the lake stage, while the peninsula of the Olympic lake became a fun zone for outdoor lovers and families with children. Vintage BMW fans encountered automotive gems from the past while they strolled through the park.</p>

<p>After a brief stint in India, Edgar Heinrich returned to Munich to lead the BMW Motorrad design team. It was a happy return for the motorcycle enthusiast, who began his career at BMW in 1986. He spearheaded the design of many BMW motorcycles: the Paris-Dakar rally bike, the K 1200 S and R, the HP2 Enduro, the R 1150 GS, the R 1200 GS and most recently the S 1000 RR. </p> <p>Before his time at Indian automaker Bajaj, he was also involved in the design of the K 1600 GT and GTL touring bikes as well as the C 600 Sport and the C 650 GT maxi scooter. All of them were successful products that expanded the horizons of this established market segment and attracted many new customers to the brand. In an exclusive interview with BMW Motorrad, Edgar Heinrich talks about his passion for designing, collecting and restoring motorcycles of all kinds. </p>

<p>The 100th anniversary of the BMW Group is an opportunity to look back at the historic early days of the motorised two-wheeler and ahead to the future, where the role of the motorcycle will be completely redefined in an increasingly digital world.</p> <p>It's the 7th of March, 1916. Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (Bavarian Aircraft Works) begins operations on Lerchenauer Strasse in the north of Munich. Three years later, Zeno Diemer sets the world altitude record of 9,760 metres with the BMW IV six-cylinder inline aircraft engine.</p> <p>The small factory will later go on to reach new heights in other vehicle segments. Soon after changing its name to Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, the company begins developing the first motorcycle, long before it enters the automobile sector.</p>

<p>The road stops at the Darién Gap. To continue his journey from Alaska to Argentina, Dylan Wickrama builds a raft, powered by his BMW R 1150 GS, and starts his adventure in the Pacific. The Sri Lankan's story spellbinds very many people. Now a documentary film is going to be produced - using crowdfunding.</p> <p>Life sometimes invents stories that are more incredible than any Hollywood film maker could ever think up. One such life story is that of Dylan Wickrama. It is about a boy who often looked out to sea from his native Sri Lanka and passionately longed to know what lies beyond the horizon. It was unlikely that he would ever find out. Because Dylan grew up in poor circumstances. His father was killed by a burglar when Dylan was not even six years old. He had to grow up, and bear responsibility, much too fast. Years later he received the opportunity to discover the world he hitherto only knew from the journals that were passed around the village. On his BMW R1150 GS "Bruce" he travelled more than 210,000 km on four continents over a period of three years. But the real adventure begins at the Darién Gap between Panama and Colombia.</p>

<p>Manoeuvring motorcycles over dilapidated bridges, crossing rivers with the GS and changing tyres in a hurry: the International GS Trophy is an enduro challenge like no other.</p> <p>In 2016 it was time for the event once again. 19 teams from all over the world rode their BMW R 1200 GS motorcycles across northern Thailand. The GS riders conquered 1,400 kilometres, 19 special tests and seven daily stages. They crossed jungles, dams and rain forests, enduring brutal heat and high humidity. The sixth International GS Trophy left them physically exhausted but satisfied in every other respect. </p>

<p>Allow us to introduce: Inga Birna Erlingsdóttir, currently the only female motorcycle police officer in Iceland. Motorcycles are Inga's great passion. For her job she rides all day, every day. In her spare time, she exchanges her police motorcycle for a BMW GS. </p>

<p>As the first female marshal at the International GS Trophy, Jolandie, or simply "Jo" Rust has to assert herself in a typically male domain. It's not difficult for her. Rust doesn't get fazed that easily. Not even after being held up at gunpoint during her trip across Africa on an Enduro.</p> <p>The guys wipe the sweat from their brows. Temperatures are soaring past the 30-degree mark. But it's not the heat that's tough for these men, it's the incredible humidity in Mae Sariang, a town in the heart of Thailand's back country. At a loss for what to do, they stand around a team mate's motorcycle before making one last attempt to pull the 250 kilo R 1200 GS out of the mud. Forget it. They need Jo. Jo is the team leader, the boss, the pro. Jo has pulled her team mates out of the mud many times during the seven-day International GS Trophy Enduro adventure. And out of other messes.</p>

<p>He's travelled the Sahara, the Atacama and even Antarctica. Photographer and geographer Michael Martin is in his element in places where you almost never see another human face.</p> <p>Michael Martin travelled to the desert for the first time at the age of 17. He rode his moped to Morocco, looked out over the vast expanse of the desert, and was captivated for life. Since then, he has spent most of his time on brilliant beige sand beneath the deep blue sky. He lives rough here, holding out for the right moment to press the shutter.</p>

Born in Munich, she loves motorcycling with a passion and keeps herself in shape with the Thai martial art Muay Thai. <p>The BMW Motorrad Days drew motorcycling fans from all over the world to meet up in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Two of them even travelled all the way from British Columbia in Canada. As winners of the social media campaign #Rideandshare, they received a priceless experience.</p> <p>Naomi Tweddle and Alberto Lara Mendieta are more commonly known in the social media world as MotoLara. The pair's motorcycling adventures have gone down a storm in their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter communities as well as on their website. This is how BMW Motorrad became aware of MotoLara while on the lookout for a social media superfan, and invited them and other passionate bikers to post their experiences in a challenge under the tag #Rideandshare. In the end, the winner would be the one able to excite and motivate their community to interact and the one who got the most likes and shares.</p>
