Major challenges and new friendships
2022 International GS Trophy

Spectacular journeys across rugged rocks, sand and mud, strenuous trial challenges – riders have given it their all. On 4 September 2022, the ultimate off-road adventure launched in Albania’s pristine dream setting: the 8th Int. GS Trophy. The seven-day challenge is an once-in-a-lifetime experience that demands everything from international participants: courage, skill and perseverance. Tests the 57 participants took required great skill, but above all genuine team spirit – absolute #SpiritOfGS.

Team South Africa.
The participants in the Int. GS Trophy 2020.

Team South Africa is probably one of the strongest in the field of the Int. GS Trophy. They started to participate back in 2012, scored the second place in the leaderboard in 2014 and took the trophy home two times in a row in 2016 and 2018. That’s why BJ Vosloo (34), Brandon Jason Grimsted (20) and Cobus Theron (28) are very eager to defend the front position in the 2020 edition. BJ Vosloo is an industrial architect and project manager from Cape Town. Brandon Jason Grimsted from Fouriesburg works as a commercial driver and Cobus Theron, who lives in Tulbagh, is a farmer.

Limitless #Soulfuel
The new Heritage models

Experience the passion of yesteryear with today's technology on the road and show who you are - that is what #Soulfuel stands for. Our new Heritage models are the result of a long history in which we keep reinventing ourselves. What began in 1923 with the legendary BMW R 32 and its boxer engine is now being continued with the technically revised R nineT family and the new members of the R 18 family, the BMW R 18 B and the BMW R 18 Transcontinental.

Total passion
R 18 Spirit of Passion by Kingston Custom

"This won’t be just any old, stunning PR bike. It will be one with a soul, a spirit.” In just a few words Dirk Oehlerking makes clear what he – and his modified R 18 – stand for. Kingston Custom bikes are always something very special. They have names such as White Phantom or Good Ghost. And that’s not the only reason they put the fear of God into some and make the hair on enthusiasts’ necks stand on end. Even Dirk himself is gripped by total passion each time he does as much as think about his projects. However, there was something else involved in the R 18 “mega project”: a responsibility like never before.

Defined strength in a straight line
The R 18 Dragster by Roland Sands Design

Roland Sands is known for his daring designs with sports racing influences. He combines styles and knows no limits. When modifying the R 18, he draws inspiration from his father’s drag racing days: He reduces the mighty cruiser to the essentials and gears it up for maximum speed on straight roads. The result is a straight-line dragster with an iconic boxer engine – the R 18 Dragster.

Concept R 18 /2 makes EICMA debut.
Second BMW Motorrad cruiser concept unveiled.

Now, a second design study featuring the awe-inspiring 1800cc flat-twin engine has been successfully presented in Milan at the international EICMA motorcycle exhibition.

LEGO® Technic™ M 1000 RR
Building like no other.

You are driven by the fascinating original. It’s a passion that dominates you. For you, every detail, every millimetre, every technical feature counts. You love this feeling and bring it to life on the street, on the racetrack and now finally also at home: the first M LEGO® model ever and the largest LEGO® Technic motorcycle model to date has been created in close cooperation with LEGO® Technic designers: The LEGO® Technic M RR at a scale of 1:5. The specifications were clear – maximum precision to make what had previously been impossible possible. Parts were designed from scratch if they did not meet the strict requirements, something that was also done with the original. That’s exactly what “Born on the Racetrack. Build at home.” represents.

40 years of adventure
Four decades of GS

Ready for any challenge: Since 1980, the GS has stood for limitless adventure and curiosity, both on and off the road. 40 years ago, we presented the R 80 G/S for the first time as the conceptual pioneer of touring enduros, which laid the foundation for a decades-long success story. We are celebrating this anniversary with the special editions of our versatile GS models. The 40 Years GS editions are each a homage to the #SpiritofGS. They boast state-of-the-art technology, but their design is inspired by the legendary R 100 GS and reminds us of the origins of the GS.

Concept R 18 roars into life.
BMW Motorrad custom concept unveiled at Villa d’Este.

It’s the world premiere that the custom scene has been eagerly awaiting – a BMW Motorrad custom concept featuring a new prototype flat-twin engine – the highest capacity boxer motorcycle ever produced. Simply christened ‘Concept R 18’, this pure, stripped-down, raked-out bike gives more than a hint of what’s coming our way in the cruiser segment.

With "Departed", Yuichi Yoshizawa and Yoshikazu Ueda once again cause a stir – and promptly there is the next price. A masterpiece made of titanium.
Revival Cycles is showcasing big boxer engines with the Birdcage.

Alan Stulberg is a fan of boxer engines. He and his team have created a unique custom bike, living out his creative freedom, for a prototype two-cylinder boxer engine. Inspired by BMW motorcycles from the 1930s and racecars from the early 1960s, this one-of-a-kind bike will be on display for the first time at the Handbuilt Motorcycle Show in Austin, Texas: The Revival Birdcage!

Lord of the Enduros.
Dirk Thelen overcomes the hurdles of the Enduro d'Agadir atop the BMW F 850 GS.

For Dirk Thelen, things are only heading in one direction: forwards, onwards and upwards. Where other participants of the four-day long Enduro d’Agadir overcome rocky gravel, sandy pistes and wet-clay mud with their hard Enduros, the four-time German Enduro champion effortlessly sets the pace – atop the new F 850 GS. A long-distance touring enduro subjected to a brutal test and terrain, right through Morocco.

Almost 100 years old - and it's only just reaching its prime.

The new twin-cylinder boxer engine fascinates in its diversity from the very first moment. Its character is unmistakeable – in every engine speed range. It offers you increased performance and smooth running at low speeds. The BMW ShiftCam variable camshaft control ensures more powerful torque development over the entire engine speed range, providing greater control in every riding situation. Giving you power whenever you need it. More cubic capacity, more power – with higher efficiency. The strong performance with fewer gear changes gives you sovereignty. A masterpiece of engineering prowess.

The most widely renowned customizers have run riot on the R nineT. With their unmistakable signatures, they show what can be done with expertise and the modern classic boxer. Curtains up for the Soulfuel bikes!

These are just a few, we'll keep adding more. In the future, the nineT may form a new basis for customising.

On to the next challenge with the G 310 R – the Park ‘n’ Ride Challenge. This means: 2 teams, 2 bikes, 2 longboards, a multi-storey car park and a lot of riding pleasure. Curve by curve and level by level, both teams experience the flow. The challenge requires ability, riding skill and a generous slice of fun. Just right for Sarah, Chris, Guto and Sebastian.

Roaring engines in a picture-book Alpine setting.
This year marks the 15th year of BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

For the past 15 years, thousands of bikers from around the world have been flocking to Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the foothills of the Wetterstein mountains. BMW Motorrad Days, the motorcycle event of the year, has been taking place here for the past 15 years.

Garmisch Partenkirchen sits like a story-book town at the foot of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain. Countless trails take hikers up to nearby peaks and beyond to ice-cold Alpine lakes. Once a year, this idyllic setting is a magnet for thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts. A festival atmosphere takes over in Garmisch-Partenkirchen during the event. The locals celebrate together with bikers, who come to BMW Motorrad Days from literally every corner of the earth.

Strikingly different.
The BMW Concept Stunt G 310.

It's loud, and it attracts attention – the new stunt concept study from BMW Motorrad. A single-cylinder roadster with the unique design of a stunt bike. One look and it's obvious how much riding pleasure this concept bike delivers.

The one who dances with the bike.
Stunt rider Mattie Griffin and the G 310 R.

He is referred to as an artist on the motorcycle – and a dancer: Mattie Griffin. With spectacular tricks on the G 310 R, the Irish stunt riding star enthralled the audience at the BMW Motorrad Days in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Super heroes and super bikes.
Riccardo Burchielli's illustrations bring the first BMW Motorrad comic to life.

Comics carry us off into a colourful parallel universe. One where super heroes are fighting an endless battle against evil villains in an attempt to save the world. Riccardo Burchielli is the maker of comics like these. His current work was inspired by his love for BMW bikes.

In the graphic novel "Riders in the Storm" by BMW Motorrad and Panini, Riccardo Burchielli has immortalized real-life motorcyclists in a futuristic plot about the struggle against evil. Without giving too much away, readers can expect strong female characters (but not in the way the comic scene is mostly known for), genetic engineering, monsters, evil assistants and, of course, motorcycles.

A storm is brewing...
The new graphic novel riders in the storm is about to be published.

The long wait for comic fans and BMW motorcycle enthusiasts will soon be over: The new graphic novel 'Riders in the Storm' will soon be available worldwide, both as English and German language editions. Here is a short preview of what you can expect from the unique limited edition collector's issue.

Riding pleasure behind the scenes.
The making of the Park ‘n’ Ride Challenge.

The filming of the Park ‘n’ Ride Challenge was not just a challenge for the G 310 R. Filming went on for two nights long, countless neon tubes were fitted, longboards were burnt, hours of film material were generated and of course litres of coffee were drunk. And the fun behind the scenes did not come up short either. Chris Northover among others made sure of this with his constantly high spirits, even at 4 in the morning.

"Keep pushing designers to their limits".
Designer Alexander Buckan talks about the BMW Concept Stunt G 310.

The BMW Concept Stunt G 310 is a striking stunt bike: One look at its unique design and you can tell that it was a lot of fun to create. Senior Designer Alexander Buckan talks to BMW Motorrad about the design process, Chris Pfeiffer's influence and the initial reactions to the bike.

How many people were involved in the design process?

The whole team is involved in design projects. This project was no exception. Ola Stenegard, Volker Hohdorf, Vianney Selosse, Bianca-Maria Hoffmann and I were involved in the process. The project was headed by Edgar Heinrich, head of design at BMW Motorrad.

What was your role?

I was the senior designer. It's difficult to explain my role exactly. I'm more like a design mentor or you could even call me the art manager. After all, someone has to ensure that everyone does what I want (he grins). But joking aside, I manage the designers and serve as the link between the workshop, the designers and the marketing team.

Crafting a feeling.
The BMW Motorrad design process.

Striking characters work in the BMW Motorrad design team. Every designer has their own style and feels at home in their own biker scene. And each and every one of them adds their own inspiration and passion. These different forms are then combined in the design process: they are manifested in each new BMW Motorrad creation. Edgar Heinrich, head designer at BMW Motorrad, introduces the BMW Motorrad design team and the design process.

Unique specimens.
R nineT conversions.

With unmistakeable handwriting, they show what can be done with expertise, creativity and the modern classic boxer.

Not many people are brave enough to build a custom motorcycle, but those who do it are driven by PURE passion and turn their customers' dreams into true icons.

More and more renowned custom shops are converting old twin-valve BMWs into unique works of art. These are just a few, we'll keep adding more. In the future, the nineT may form a new basis for customising.

Once a racer, always a racer.

When he then unpacks the brand-new R nineT Scrambler in the driver's paddock, a crowd of people gather round the prominent figurehead of the speedway scene. "I feel like the John Travolta of Wheels and Waves. Crazy how they all know me", Karl says and smiles proudly to the group.

308,000 kilometres on one bike.
It must be true love.

Željan Rakela, a 36-year-old Croatian, enjoys every day and above all every single mile of his life. And he loves motorcycles. Especially his BMW R 1200 GS Adventure. He even has the numbers to prove his love: He bought his bike in 2006. And it's been non-stop passion ever since: the Croatian has racked up a total of 308,000 kilometres in the past 8 years. Impressive numbers. But they're even more impressive when you consider that Željan spends only two months on his bike a year, his entire annual holiday.

75 years old and not even remotely quiet.
An old BMW R 12 rides from France to Mongolia. And back again.

What an ambitious undertaking: 23,000 kilometres from France to Mongolia and back again. On a 75-year-old BMW R 12 with a sidecar. He rode through some of the most remote and inhospitable regions of the world. Often in temperatures below freezing. But after many months on the road, Eric Dumas is back again. Recuperated and ready to go again. We met with him for this interview.

Planet Desert.
Four times around the world with Michael Martin.

The geographer and photographer Michael Martin explored a variety of different icy and dry deserts for the "Planet Desert" project. Martin circumnavigated the Earth four times in order to complete the project. The BMW R 1200 GS Adventure accompanied him on his journey.

Martin has now returned from his journey - with a book weighing five kilos and the "Planet Desert" lecture of the same name. The 52-year-old reports from the most extreme zones of the planet and on his experiences with his motorcycle in the desert.

From Asia to the Alps.
A journey to BMW Motorrad Days.

Each year, motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world make a pilgrimage to the Alps. Their destination? The renowned motorcycle festival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: BMW Motorrad Days. Even though the event is not until July, one BMW rider is already on his way – all the way from Thailand. Prasit Aphiphunya, 47, left Bangkok on 22 April and rode to Russia via Mongolia. In this exclusive interview he tells us more about this impressive journey on his BMW F 800 GS.

Taste the spirit of GS for yourself.
Adventure for everyone.

We want to travel round the whole world or simply get a taste of adventure. We want to better ourselves or simply leave for a tour lasting several days. Or we simply want to ride GS here and now. Adventure has no limits. Adventure is not selective. Anyone can have an adventure. Because GS is everywhere and for everyone.

We live and breathe for the spirit of GS.
We share the adventure.

Caution, contagious! Wherever your journey takes you and whoever accompanies you, the GS ambassadors are spreading the spirit of GS around the world. They fascinate with their adventures. They excite with their tales. And with their courage they inspire you to go out and discover the unknown.
We can only introduce a few here, because more and more of you are becoming infected and being carried away by the spirit of GS.

Adventures in heat and ice.
The desert: Michael Martin's home.

Geographer Michael Martin explored a variety of different deserts and polar regions for the "Planet Desert" project. He experienced extreme heat, dryness and icy cold on his 40 trips. The photographer also travelled on his motorcycle through these extreme regions. The photographer undertook difficult trips and expeditions to the most far-flung corners of the globe on his GS. Almost half of the Earth's land surface is covered by arid areas, cold deserts and polar deserts. While the cold and icy deserts are found beyond the two polar circles, the arid areas are stretched along two belts along the Earth's two tropic lines. Martin follows these four extreme zones for this project. He has photographed arid deserts, cold deserts and polar deserts, not to mention extraordinary experiences on his motorcycle.
